The Road to Sainthood: Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska

THE CURE THAT LED TO THE BEATIFICATION OF
BLESSED MARY ANGELA

The Felician Sisters began the process of canonization of the venerable servant of God, Mary Angela Truszkowska, in 1949. The opening of the preliminary process of inquiry into the life and reputed holiness of Mary Angela began on October 29, 1949. The different stages of investigation occurred between 1949 and 1982. One of the stages of the investigation is the Process of Inquiry into alleged miracles.

The Diocese of Buffalo had the privilege and responsibility of participating in an investigative process when it became apparent that a miraculous healing may have occurred to one of its faithful. The Process of Inquiry into the alleged instantaneous cure of Lillian Halasinski in January 1984 through the intercession of Venerable Servant of God, Mother Mary Angela, took place from February 10 to August 15, 1986 in Buffalo, New York. The inquiry was conducted under the jurisdiction of Bishop Edward D. Head, Ordinary of the Diocese of Buffalo. Bernardino da Siena, Postulator of Mother Mary Angela's cause, came from Rome, Italy to participate in the proceedings. Sister Mary Antonelle Dziechciarz, Vice-Postulator in America, was also present , along with other witnesses as required by the norms. Sister Antonelle conducted the preliminary investigation into the claimed miracle and gathered the materials and reports on the case initially submitted to Rome.

Lillian Halasinski, a life long resident of Dunkirk, New York, was introduced to Mary Angela Truszkowska by Sister Mary Leocretia Laskowski. Sister Leocretia regularly visited Mrs. Halasinski in Brooks Memorial Hospital and brought her communion. During one of her visits, she told Lillian about Mary Angela, gave her a picture and encouraged her to pray to Mary Angela. According to Lillian, she prayed to Mary Angela every day from that time on. On January 4, 1984, Lillian sat in the living room of her home in Dunkirk crying from the extreme pain and praying for relief. It was at that time that Lillian felt the presence of Mary Angela, experienced a beautiful sense of quiet and peace, and suddenly was well. Lillian suffered from diabetic neuropathy, a condition that was medically incurable.

The church certified the healing of Lillian as a miracle which led to the beatification of Blessed Mary Angela on April 18, 1993 in Rome, Italy. Lillian and her daughter, Geraldine, were present at the beatification ceremony.

It is not easy to become a saint; neither is it easy to be declared one by the Church. The Church's procedure for declaring a saint consists of two processes, beatification and canonization.

The Felician Sisters are actively

promoting the Cause for the

Canonization of Blessed Mary Angela:

by making her better known around

the world through the distribution

of publications and newsletters;

medals and holy cards by spreading

devotion to her during prayer

gatherings and group meetings

and through the writing of

spiritual documents, prayers

and other publications

by seeking out and

investigating alleged miraculous

cures that may further Blessed Angela's

cause for canonization.

His Holiness John Paul II officially recognized Mother Angela for her outstanding virtues and life of holiness by elevating her to the elite corps of the Blessed on April 18, 1993 Following this official public act of the Church, the number of persons seeking her assistance in prayer has continued to grow.

The current procedure of beatification and canonization causes draws liberally from the past and is legislated by Canon Law. The beatification and canonization processes could be considered investigations. Each of these two processes has its own set of investigations or steps to follow. The beatification process is lengthier than the canonization process. The beatification process proves the holiness of the person who is being considered for sainthood and authenticates the miraculous event received through the intercession of the candidate for beatification. The canonization process authenticates the miraculous event received through the
intercession of the candidate for canonization.

In order to proceed with the beatification or canonization process, it is necessary for two miracles to be obtained through the intercession of the candidate for sainthood. One miracle is needed for beatification and another for canonization.

The procedure regarding a miraculous healing begins when cures are reported. Because of the extensive documentation needed to authenticate a miracle, the postulator is to decide early on whether a healing will be acceptable in the process for beatification or canonization. The decisive factor would be that the reported cure is unexplainable in the face of modern medical technology. Sometimes, information on a cure is reported; and although the healed person is convinced it was miraculous, modern medicine may be able to give a rationale for the cure.

While there is no doubt that God works miracles through the intercession of a Blessed or

a Saint that can be explained by science, Church authority, however, will approve a cure as miraculous only if the science of medicine can find no explanation for it. Many people are involved in the beatification and canonization processes including witnesses, church authorities, the Postulator and other individuals. A major responsibility of the Postulator is to prove the existence of the holiness of the person who is being considered for sainthood. The Postulator fills a role like that of an attorney representing his or her client in court. Many issues and concerns are investigated and the paper work is extensive, but the Postulator must always be faithful to the truth and be at the service of the whole Church and Community. Sister Mary Marta Zielinska, a Felician Sister, is the Postulator of the Cause of Blessed Mary Angela.

W 1949 roku Siostry Felicjanki rozpoczęły proces kanonizacji czcigodnej sługi Bożej, Marii Angeli Truszkowskiej. Natomiast samo otwarcie procesu wstępnego dotyczącego badania życia i domniemanej świętości Marii Angelii nastąpiło w październiku 1949 roku. Poszczególne etapy badań miały miejsce w latach 1949 – 1982. Jednym z etapów jest badanie domniemanych cudów.

Diecezja w Buffalo miała przywilej podjęcia się zadania uczestniczenia w procesie badawczym, gdy okazało się, że cudowne uzdrowienie mogło dotyczyć jednego z ich wiernych. W dniach od 10 lutego do 15 sierpnia 1986 roku w Buffalo, w stanie New York odbył się proces badania natychmiastowego i domniemanego uzdrowienia Lilliany Halasinski przez wstawiennictwo Czcigodnej Sługi Bożej, Matki Marii Angeli, które miało miejsce w styczniu 1984 roku,. Proces został przeprowadzony pod jurysdykcją biskupa Edwarda D. Head’a, ordynariusza Diecezji w Buffalo. Z Rzymu natomiast przybył Bernardino da Siena, postulator w sprawie Matki Angeli, by wziąć udział w wymaganych procedurach. Była również obecna Siostra Mary Antonelle Dziechciarz, wice – postulatorka z Ameryki, wraz z pozostałymi świadkami zebranymi zgodnie z obowiązującym prawem. Siostra Antonelle przeprowadziła wstępne badanie odnośnie do domniemanego cudu oraz zebrała materiały i sprawozdania na temat przedstawionego wcześniej w Rzymie uzdrowienia.

Właśnie wtedy odczuła obecność Marii Angeli, doświadczyła pokoju i ciszy, i nagle poczuła się zdrowa. Lilliana cierpiała z powodu nieuleczalnej neuropatii cukrzycowej.

Kościół zaświadczył o uzdrowieniu Lilliany, które uznano za cud. Doprowadził on do beatyfikacji Błogosławionej Marii Angeli w dniu 18 kwietnia 1993 roku w Rzymie. Lilliana i jej córka, Geraldine, były obecne na ceremonii beatyfikacji.

Nie jest łatwo zostać świętym, nie jest również łatwy proces ogłoszenia świętego przez Kościół. Procedury kościelne prowadzące do ogłoszenia świętego składają się z dwóch etapów, beatyfikacji i kanonizacji.


	Ojciec święty, Jan Paweł II, oficjalnie uznał wyjątkowe cnoty i świętość życia Matki Angeli zaliczając ją do grona błogosławionych w dniu 18 kwietnia 1993 roku. Następstwem tego oficjalnego aktu Kościoła jest wciąż wzrastająca liczba osób poszukujących jej pomocy w modlitwie. Aktualne procedury beatyfikacji i kanonizacji w znacznym stopniu opierają się na wzorcach z przeszłości i są zalegalizowane przez prawo kanoniczne. Procesy beatyfikacji i kanonizacji można inaczej określić jako badanie lub dochodzenie. Każdy z tych dwóch procesów składa się z kolejnych, następujących po sobie etapów. Proces beatyfikacyjny jest dłuższy. Prowadzi on do udowodnienia świętości kandydata na ołtarze i sprawdza autentyczność cudownego wydarzenia, które nastąpiło przez jego przyczynę. Proces kanonizacyjny sprawdza autentyczność cudu za przyczyną kandydata do kanonizacji. Aby procesy beatyfikacji i kanonizacji mogły posuwać się do przodu, konieczne są dwa cuda za przyczyną kandydata do świętości. Jeden cud wymagany jest do beatyfikacji, a drugi do kanonizacji. Procedura uznania cudownego uzdrowienia rozpoczyna się od momentu, gdy zostanie ono zgłoszone. Z powodu ogromu dokumentacji potrzebnej od uznania autentyczności cudu, postulator już na samym początku musi zdecydować, czy dane uzdrowienie będzie odpowiednie do uznania w procesie beatyfikacyjnym lub kanonizacyjnym. Czynnikiem decydującym jest fakt, że zgłoszone uleczenie jest niewytłumaczalne w świetle współczesnej medycyny. Zdarza się, że uleczona osoba zgłaszająca informację o uzdrowieniu jest przekonana o cudzie, jednak aktualna wiedza medyczna może podać inne uzasadnienie na uzdrowienie.


Oczywiście nie ma wątpliwości, że Bóg czyni także takie cuda przez wstawiennictwo błogosławionego lub świętego, które można wyjaśnić naukowo, jednak autorytet Kościoła zatwierdzi tylko takie cudowne uzdrowienie, którego współczesna medycyna nie potrafi wyjaśnić.

W procesy beatyfikacji i kanonizacji włączone są liczne osoby: świadkowie, przedstawiciele Kościoła, postulator oraz inni. Głównym zadaniem postulatora jest udowodnienie świętości życia osoby, która jest kandydatem na ołtarze. Postulator spełnia rolę adwokata reprezentującego swojego klienta w sądzie. Dokonuje on badania wielu zagadnień i spraw, a zebrana dokumentacja jest zazwyczaj niezwykle obszerna. Postulator zobowiązany jest pozostać wierny Kościołowi, działać zawsze zgodnie z prawdą służąc całej wspólnocie Kościoła. Siostra Maria Marta Zielińska, felicjanka, jest aktualnie postulatorką procesu kanonizacji Błogosławionej Marii Angeli.

A Estrada para a Santidade: Bem-aventurada Maria Ângela Truszkowska


	Não é fácil ser um santo, mas o mais difícil ainda é ser declarada santa pela Igreja. O procedimento da Igreja para declarar uma pessoa santa consiste em dois processos – beatificação e canonização. Sua Santidade, João Paulo II, reconheceu em Madre Ângela virtudes extraordinárias e uma vida de santidade, declarando-a Bem-aventurada no dia 18 de abril de 1993. Após esta declaração oficial e pública da Igreja, cresceu e vai crescendo cada vez mais o número de pessoas que rezam pela intercessão de Madre Ângela para obter ajuda. O procedimento para a beatificação e a canonização vem do passado e é legislado pela Lei Canônica. Podemos considerar os processos de beatificação e de canonização como investigações. Cada um destes processos tem sua própria investigação ou passos para serem seguidos. O processo de beatificação é mais prolongado que o processo de canonização. O processo de beatificação comprova a santidade da pessoa e declara autênticos os eventos milagrosos acontecidos através da intercessão da candidata para a beatificação. O processo de canonização evidencia o milagre realizado pela intercessão da candidata à canonização. Para se iniciar o processo de beatificação ou de canonização, são necessários dois milagres ocorridos pela intercessão da pessoa em questão – um para a beatificação e outro para a canonização. O processo para uma cura milagrosa inicia-se no momento que o fato foi relatado. Devido a grande quantidade de documentação necessária para o reconhecimento do milagre, a postuladora tem que decidir no início se a cura pode ser considerada para o processo de beatificação ou de canonização. O fator decisivo é a inexplicabilidade do ocorrido diante da tecnologia médica moderna. Às vezes a cura é reconhecida como tal pela própria pessoa, mas ainda que ela esteja convencida que é milagre, a medicina moderna é capaz de apresentar um argumento racional para a cura.



Ainda que não haja dúvida que Deus opera milagres pela intercessão de um Bem-aventurado ou um santo que possam ser explicados pela ciência, a autoridade Eclesial, contudo, aprovará uma cura como sendo milagrosa somente se a ciência médica não puder dar uma explicação para ela.

Muitas pessoas estão envolvidas nos processos de beatificação e de canonização: testemunhas, autoridades eclesiais e outros. A maior responsabilidade da Postuladora é provar a santidade da pessoa considerada para ser proclamada santa. A postuladora assume um papel semelhante ao do advogado que representa o seu cliente diante do tribunal. Muitos assuntos e considerações são investigados e exigem muito trabalho por escrito. A postuladora precisa ser fiel à verdade e estar a serviço da Igreja e de toda a Comunidade. Irmã Maria Marta Zielinska, Irmã Feliciana, é a Postuladora da Causa da Bem-aventurada Maria Ângela. As Irmãs Felicianas estão promovendo a Causa da Canonização da Bem-aventurada Maria Ângela: procurando fazê-la melhor conhecida no mundo através de publicações e boletins e ´pela distribuição de medalhas e santinhos, difundindo a devoção a ela nos encontros de oração, nos diversos grupos e através dos escritos espirituais, orações e outras publicações, rocurando conhecer e investigar as curas que possam ajudar na Canonização da Bem-aventurada Maria Ângela.



A promoção da causa da canonização da Bem-aventurada Ângela envolve os esforços de todas as Irmãs Felicianas, dos Associados, de cada coordenadora da Causa da Bem-aventurada Maria Ângela, e da Postuladora da Congregação. Relatórios chegam de muitas partes do mundo atestando milagres da graça e favores especiais obtidos através da intercessão da Bem-aventurada Maria Ângela. Alguns milagres foram investigados.
