1st International Felician Chapter of Mats
It is a sacred gathering of our Felician Family that takes place every six years. The tradition dates back to the beginnings of the Franciscan movement, when St. Francis called the early Franciscans together. They rolled out their sleeping mats in the Assisi countryside. In that same spirit of simplicity, unity and discernment, our Chapter is a time of renewal, storytelling, prayer and shared direction as we widen our tents and deepen our mission to witness the Gospel
THEME: Being People of the Way
The history of the earliest Christian community is a story of roads. It was composed of the original disciples and pilgrims who traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate the holy days.
The first followers of Jesus called themselves “the Way” or “People of the Way.”
They believed that Jesus was “the way” to God the Father.
The early Christian community was one in which all possessions were held in common, there were no needy persons, and all members were “of one heart and mind.”
The disciples who fled Jerusalem continued to establish countercultural communities of economic sharing, scripture study, participatory worship, and service to the poor. They were the people who lived “intentionally.”
“The Way” was a movement that emphasized Jesus’ teachings, death, and resurrection as the path to transformation. According to historian Diana Butler Bass, Christianity succeeded because it transformed the lives of people in a chaotic world.
What is it that we need at this time in our chaotic world to be transformed – to continue being the people of the Way – keeping in mind the journey, the companions, the destination.
