I first met Sister Desire’ in February 2019 when she agreed to be the subject of a long term personal project that I wanted to do about a woman who chooses to become a Catholic sister. I’ve been photographing Sister Desire’ off and on ever since then, documenting her life and work as a sister. Born to an African American father and a Hispanic mother, she is a minority not only in America but also among her community of the Felician Sisters of North America. She is a remarkable woman, strong, kind, brave, inspiring, and spiritual.
Recently a photographer who I greatly admirer said that when telling someone’s story, ‘tell me who they are, not only what they do.’ This morning I joined Sister Desire’ at a peaceful protest in Coraopolis, PA. Today I finally felt like my images were the beginning of an adequate reply to, “Tell me who they are.” @SisterDesire Anne Marie Findlay
